What is 4K?

4K TV or Ultra-high-definition TV is the next evolution of TV picture quality BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

4K UHD is a resolution of 3840 pixels x 2160 lines (with an aspect ratio 16:9) and is one of the two resolutions of ultra high definition television, the other being 8K UHD which is 7680 pixels × 4320 lines.

This means that 4K has more than 8 million pixels, which is four times the number in Full HD (1,920 x 1,080)

The obvious benefit is a sharper definition picture.

How to view 4K

4K TV channels: Some 4K TV channels are becoming available to watch, such as BT Sport Ultra HD, but there aren't many. Technical challenges remain in introducing 4K channels onto Freeview and that will be a big factor in this technology going mainstream.

4K streaming: Content providers have already begun streaming content in 4K (such as Breaking Bad and House of Cards on Netflix) but you'll need at least 15Mpbs broadband (ideally 20Mbps or higher) to get the best possible experience. with netflix recommending the following braodband speed requirement:

  • Standard Definition (SD 1366 x 768) - 3 Megabits per second.
  • High Definition (HD 1920 x 1080) - 5 Megabits per second
  • Ultra High Definition (UHD 3840 x 2160) - 25 Megabits per second
